Egypt And Palestine Are The Two Fastest-Growing Tourist Destinations in 2017

The past few years haven’t been easy ones on the Middle East, and Egypt especially has taken hit after hit. Tourism numbers in 2016 were bleak — according to CAPMAS, tourist totals went down from 4.8 million in 2015 (for the months of January to June) to less than half in 2016, at 2.3 million. This was mainly because of the loss of a large percentage of Russian tourists, and British tourists at a slightly lower percentage, following the Russian Metrojet crash and the British government advising against travel to North and South Sinai.

But all is not lost — The United Nations World Tourism Organization just released its UNWTO World Tourism Barometer for the first four months of 2017, which reported the fastest-growing tourist destinations of this year, and lo and behold, Palestine topped the list with Egypt coming in at second.

The list was as follows:

1. Palestine: up 57.8%. (400,000 visitors in 2016).
2. Egypt: up 51%. (5.26 million visitors in 2016).
3. Northern Mariana Islands: up 37.3%. (531,000 visitors in 2016).
4. Iceland: up 34.9%. (1.79 million visitors in 2016).
5. Tunisia: up 32.5%. (5.7 million visitors in 2016).
6. Vietnam: up 31.2%. (10 million visitors in 2016).
7. Uruguay: up 30.2%. (3 million visitors in 2016).
8. Nicaragua: up 28.4%. (1.5 million visitors in 2016).
9. Mongolia: up 28.3%. (404,000 visitors in 2016).
10. Israel: up 25.1%. (2.9 million visitors in 2016).

While we in Egypt still have a long way to go to reach our 2010 tourism total –14.73 million– I think we can all breathe a sigh of relief that our touristic tide has turned for the better.
